About this audiobook

Welcome to the wide world of paranormal pastimes, where striking out might strike you dead. Editors Charlaine Harris and Toni L. P. Kelner are your announcers for this all-new story collection of the most peculiar plays ever made.…

Sports fans live and die by their teams’ successes and failures—though not literally. But these fourteen authors have written spirited—in more ways than one—new tales of killer competitions that would make even the most die-hard players ask to be benched.

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris’s “The Blue Hereafter,” Manfred Bernardo learns about softball from a certain blond barmaid in Louisiana.

Life-and-death stakes make the competition get serious in New York Times bestseller William Kent Krueger’s “Hide and Seek.”

New York Times bestselling author Mercedes Lackey’s “False Knight on the Road” features a high-stakes drag race on a foggy mountain road between a clever young bootlegger and a mysterious stranger.

In New York Times bestselling author Laura Lippman’s “Ice,” a young girl learns the true story behind a bit of neighborhood folklore.

New York Times bestseller Seanan McGuire presents “Jammed,” in which a chimera loose during the Roller Derby makes it anyone’s guess as to who will still be skating by the time the buzzer sounds.

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson’s “Dreamer,” a game of cops and robbers is a new challenge when the players are able to switch bodies at will.

And New York Times bestselling author Scott Sigler follows ghost stomper Hunter Hunterson as he investigates a haunted, never-ending baseball game in “The Case of the Haunted Safeway.”

These and eight more supernatural sporting stories are guaranteed to have you rooting for the home team…or else.…

Read this anthology in order to round out my Seanan McGuire ‘verse — stayed to read the rest because it’s a really stellar collection of short stories. Lots and lot of great stuff in here. Loved it!

I adored most of the stories in this anthology, and very much enjoyed all of them. The narration was outstanding. I'll return this to the library soon, so you can have a turn listening to it :)

Nice! Most anthologies I read these days have a few stories I like, a few I really hate, and most pretty good. This one had some nasty stories - mostly where characters chose not to step up and take the right action (I guess I agree with Sookie!) - but even those were richly done and well-written. I'd read two before - I haven't quite read everything Mercedes Lackey and Seanan McGuire have written, but pretty close; the rest were new to me. I really liked the theme and the angles on it that various authors took. There was even a comic horror story - Lovecraft style - that actually worked for me, who hates horror. There were a few that are apparently part of a larger series, that I'll be looking for - 'The Case of the Haunted Safeway' is one, the last story 'Bell, Book, and Candlepin' is another. Excellent - I'll be looking for more anthologies by these editors.

*This review is only for the InCryptid portion of the anthology at this point.*

I love Antimony so much, and I love Roller Derby. This was another fun, small insight into how Antimony's life differs and how it's similar to Verity's life. I am loving getting to know Antimony better, and I'm also loving a bit more glimpses into the cousin that is Artie. McGuire really has hooked me into this world of Cryptids.

A fun collection of supernatural story telling! The stories follow the same thread in that they all revolve around games. The variety of play makes them all stand out on their own. A few authors that I’ve read before and really enjoyed in this book were Charlaine Harris, Scott Sigler and Laura Lippman. Harris brings Sookie Stackhouse into this short story not as the main character, but with a supporting role that helps create a really cool story. Sigler’s “The Case of the Haunted Safeway” was a great piece of storytelling where the characters were made alive, even though some of them were ghosts. My favorite story of the bunch was “Jammed” by Seanan McGuire, which creatively combined roller derby and a chimera. The last tale of the bunch was also a favorite, “Bell, Book, and Candlepin” by Toni L. P. Kelner, which mixed together a werewolf, witch, and bowling alley. Overall, an engaging group of stories.

Games Creatures Play is an entertaining anthology from fifteen contributors, with each short story featuring the unusual combination of the paranormal and sports. Some of the authors didn’t venture too far from their comfort zone. ‘Into the Blue Hereafter’ by Charlaine Harris is set at a softball game in Bon Temps, where Sookie Stackhouse and Manfred Bernado meet for the first time. Similarly Seanan McGuire doesn’t stray far from the familiarity of her InCryptid series, ‘Jammed,’ in which a chimera is on the rampage during a Roller Derby, features Antimony Price. I enjoyed both stories in part at least because of my familiarity with the characters and their worlds. My favourites included Scott Sigler’s ‘The Case of the Haunted Safeway’, a ghostly tale of love and baseball which managed to be funny, sweet and a little bit spooky all at the same time, Jan Burke’s ‘Stepping into the Dead Zone’ which portrays dodgeball as a test of loyalty and friendship, and ‘Bell, Book and Candlepin‘ by Toni L. P. Kelner in which more than just the bowling balls are returned. In Games Creatures Play you will find witches, monster stompers, faeries, Gods, ghosts and more, all playing to win and even though I have very little interest in sport in general, I really enjoyed this anthology.
