After nearly 30 years the original solid aluminium stanchions on Ammos, my 30ft Discovery 3000 in Greece, had literally worn out – the guard wires had cut well into the metal. If not given attention It was clear that eventually they’d be dangerously weakened.

I’d tried to reduce wear by using plastic tubing
