This year is like no other in so many different ways. The impact of Covid-19 on competitions, awards and their ceremonies is huge.

The cancellation of World Press Photo was announced a little while before widespread lockdowns were announced. Even at that time we had little clue how different the global landscape would be just a few short weeks later.

Regardless, the World Press Organisation decided to announce this year’s winners anyway, online only. With the exhibition – and its touring dates – on hold for the foreseeable future, it nevertheless still marks an opportunity to revisit some of the world’s best press and news photography of the past 12 months. It doesn’t take much to imagine which news story will be dominating the shortlists next year – indeed it’s hard to imagine at this point that there will be any other news story for consideration.
