James Simek solved the riddle of the origin of the non-standard C-prefix letter that Tom Conklin spotted in the right serial number on a $5 type 1 national from The First National Bank of Windham, N.Y. See Figure 1 on p. 16.
This oddity owned by Matt Draiss was first reported in the June 2018 Reader’s Showcase. Figure 2 is a blowup that compares the traditional C with the mystery C.
