Alienation and Awe

Race time is 7am. A crazy time to start any kind of ultra. Urgup has a desert climate, hot in October, so I was expecting highs of 32 and sub-zero in the night. It’s 6:30am and I’m standing around a drum fire in the morning chill, waiting for the start of Ultra Trail Cappadocia 110km. I’ve been here two days already and it strikes me – I haven’t seen a familiar face in this entire crowd. Few people speak English and I was getting pretty good at sign language. Everyone kept asking me if I was from Kenya. Not surprising: I was the only black man in all of Cappadocia!
