Corn Meal Agar is used to study chlamydospore production of Candida species. It contains corn meal infusion which provides nutrients for fungal growth and agar as the solidifying agent. Polysorbate 80 added to the medium stimulates faster chlamydospore formation in Candida species. Rice Extract Agar also induces chlamydospore and pseudomycelium formation in some yeasts to aid identification. Birdseed Agar uses seeds of Guizotia abyssinica which contain caffeic acid, allowing detection of the phenoloxidase enzyme produced by Cryptococcus neoformans and formation of melanin pigment for identification.
