Fstkl Mutluhan lkretim Okulu (Yalova, Turkey) Dear Veronica and her pupils, We are happy to work with

you, could you please tell us more about you answering our below questions? We also liked working with you. It has been a great experience, and we have all learnt from you.

1. Our languages are different. So how do you say hello, thank, you and good-bye in your language? Well, there are two official languages spoken in Barcelona: Castilian Spanish and Catalan. Hello Thank you Goodbye : Hola : Gracias : Adis Hola Grcies Adu

2. Do you have different letters in Catalan or Spanish? Sure! Remember that Catalan is a Romance language related to Spanish (and French too), but still they dont share all the letters, sounds and accent codes. The Spanish alphabet, with 27 letters, is the same as the English alphabet with the addition of the letter below: : (Similar to a typical English pronunciation of onion) The Catalan alphabet has got 26 letters, without including a variation of letter C: : English sound /s/ 3. Do you teach any other languages? No, I only teach English at school. All pupils have a tutor teacher who teaches them Catalan and Spanish, as well as other subjects. 4. Do you pupils like English?

In general, I must say that my pupils love English. They enjoy the lessons, so do I! 6 Are there any foreign children in the class? There is not a high percentage of foreign children at school, maybe just three or four per class. 7. We wear uniforms at school. Do your pupils wear uniforms at school? Pupils dont usually wear uniforms in public schools. 8. What kind of punishment do you keep your students in? Well, I sometimes have to make some pupils go without playground or write down classroom rules. I also have a couple of silent chairs in the class, so whenever a child doesnt behave well in class I make him/her sit there and reflect on his/her behaviour. 9. What are your class signs in English? Class signs are another way of practising English, and they help us remember classroom rules at any time. You just need some construction paper, markers, scissors and a wooden stick to make them:

10. Which subjects have you got? I only teach English to pupils aged 4-8 years old. But they do have other subjects, such as: Maths, Catalan, Spanish, Music, Science, P.E. and Art & Craft. 11. Do you know Atatrk?

As far as I know, I think Ataturk is the founder of the modern Turkish Republic. You told us in your school presentation! My memory is not that bad :o) 12 Are there class monitors (children who take charge of something)? Yes, we teachers think that having children taking charge of certain tasks is very important. There are pupils in charge of: giving out the class books and other material, checking out everyday weather, writing the date on the board, pulling up/down the blinds, checking attendance and feeding the fish. 13 What kind of toys or games have you got in your class? My pupils are younger than yours, and they have plenty of toys and games in their classrooms: toy bricks, Plasticine, figures, toy cars, balls, skipping ropes, and board games such as Parcheesi, snakes and ladders, dominoes, chess, three in a row, battleship game, draughts... 14 How many sessions of English per week do your pupils have? P4 graders (aged 4) have a weekly session (1 hour). Both 1st and 2nd graders (aged 6-8) have 4 sessions of English per week (4 hours). In one of these sessions we split them up into groups and then they go to the English and ICT classrooms. 15 How many children are there in the class? The pupil-teacher ratio is 25. In some classes, though, there may be even more students (26 or 27). 16 What festivals do you celebrate at school? We celebrate several festivals at school: the Chestnut Festival (October), Christmas (December), Carnival (February), Math Week (February), Easter (March), Saint George Day (April) and Sport Day (June). 17 Do you like your school? We do like our school! Its a nice school :o)
