Jan's Castle

The Situation

El castillo de Santa Catalina se alza sobre una alta pea de 820 metros de altura que domina, la ciudad de Jan.

The castle of Santa Catalina raises on a high rock of 820 meters of height that dominates, city of Jaen.

History

Esta fortaleza fue en sus orgenes un alczar rabe construido durante el reinado del rey Alhamar. Despus de la reconquista definitiva por San Fernando, en el ao 1246, se levant sobre la alcazaba mora una fortaleza cristiana con una iglesia consagrada a Santa Catalina, de la cual proviene el nombre de la fortaleza.

This fortification was in its origins an Arabic fortress constructed during the reign of the king Alhamar. After the reconquest for San Fernando, in the year 1246, it got up on the fort a Christian fortification dwells with a church dedicated to Santa Catalina, from which the name of the fortification comes.

Description

La fortaleza, que ocupa unos 170 metros de longitud, estaba compuesta por tres fortificaciones diferentes, el Alczar Viejo, Abrehuy y el Alczar Nuevo. Sobre las dos primeras fortalezas se construy el actual Parador Nacional de Turismo, por lo que el Alczar Nuevo es casi lo nico conservado.

The fortification, which occupies approximately 170 meters of length, was composed by three different fortifications, the Old Fortress, Abrehuy and the New Fortress. On the first two fortifications the current National Inn of Tourism was constructed, for what the New Fortress is an almost the only thing preserved.

The Cross

Ubicada a la izquierda del castillo, en el punto ms elevado de la ciudad, se observa una gran cruz, famosa por ser un perenne smbolo de la ciudad. Se dice que esta cruz monumental hace memoria a la que en aquel mismo lugar mand colocar Fernando III el Santo tras arrebatar la fortaleza al rey Alhama

Located to the left of the castle, in the highest point of the city, a great famous cross is observed for being an everlasting symbol of the city. It is said that this monumental cross does memory to which in the same place it gave the orders Fernando III placed the Saint after wresting the strength from the king Alhama
