THE GRAMMY AWARDS

The Grammy Awards and their 108 categories celebrate the best in music production in the USA and abroad. The best artists recordings from diverse musical fields such as pop, jazz ,blues, rap and classical music are honored with this special award every year. A Grammy is awarded to artists and technical professionals by the artists and technicians themselves. It is not the sales or chart positions that determine who should win the music worlds top accolades. In 1957, a visionary group of music professionals and label executives in Los Angeles recognized the need to create an organization that would represent the creative people in the recording arts and sciences. They founded the Recording Academy, an association of not only musicians and singers but all the professionals who work in the recording industry, such as engineers and producers. In 2001 the Latin Grammy Awards were created, bringing more diversity to the awards. Some of the categories nominated every year are: best female / male vocal performance, best contemporary album, song of the year and album of the year. But apart from recognizing the best achievements of the year, the Recording Academy also awards those professionals with outstanding production throughout their lives. These are the Lifetime Achievement Awards which have been given to artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, The Who, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles. These awards are particularly special to all music lovers because they confirm the genius of some of the greatest artists ever. The year of The Beatles award marked the 40th anniversary of their invasion of the United States. John Lennons widow Yoko Ono and George Harrisons widow Olivia accepted the award. Yoko Ono stated that if Lennon were alive he would still be asking people to give peace a chance and telling them that all they need is love.
