HISTORIA
Recibe su nombre de la Agrupacin Folclrica Ajei. Anteriormente se la conoca como Casa de los Ferrer, Casa de Don Maximino y Casa de la ta Carlota. El iniciador de la saga, y del que descienden todos los Ferrer lanzaroteos, fue Blas Ferrer Palestrelo, capitn de un regimiento militar de Valencia. Desde el siglo XVII, la familia Ferrer fue una de las ms influyentes de la isla. Debido a la amenaza del jable, el originario pueblo de Ajei se traslada hacia el poniente, cerca de los Morros del Cascajo; ah es donde el bisnieto de Palestrelo construye la actual Casa Ajei, en el siglo XVII. La madre de su ltimo morador, Carlota Ortiz Guerra, organizaba en el amplio patio de la casa reuniones a las que asista todo el pueblo para bailar y presenciar obras de teatro. En 1964, y por recomendacin de Cesar Manrique, la casa fue comprada por el Cabildo de Lanzarote, con idea de restaurarla dedicando el conjunto a un centro folclrico y casa agrcola con restaurante tpico canario. La idea no prosper. Tras un continuo deterioro, sufri un devastador incendio que destruy gran parte del edificio. El Cabildo propone al Ayuntamiento de San Bartolom permutar la vivienda por el terreno donde hoy se encuen-

tra el Monumento al Campesino, comprometindose a colaborar en la restauracin de la casa, respetando su estilo arquitectnico. Entre los aos 95 y 99, la Casa Ajei fue ocupada por el instituto para impartir clases.

It was formerly known as Casa de los Ferrer Casa de Don Maximino and Casa de la ta Carlota. The beginner of the saga and from who all Lanzarotes Ferrer descend was Blas Ferrer Palestrelo, Captain of a militar regiment in Valencia. At 1964, under Cesar Manriques recommendation the House was bought by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, with the purpose of restoring it and become a Folk Centre and Agricultural House with a typical Canarian restaurant. The original idea did not succeed. After a continued deterioration, the house suffered a devastating fire that destroyed much of the building. Then, the Cabildo proposed to the municipality of San Bartolom to exchange the House for the site where today stands the Monument to the Peas-

ant, undertaking to cooperate in the restoration of the House, respecting its architectural style. Between 95 and 99 Casa Ajei was used as the local High School.

HISTORY

ARCHITECTURE
This Manor House is a genuine sample of popular rural architecture in those days. It was built in the traditional U-shaped Canarian style, and oriented to the West. Surrounded by a high stone wall, it has woodwork of tea; and ceilings of 3 and 4 sides, covered with curved tiles. The rooms are distributed around its broad paved central courtyard. A large carved stone staircase reaches the sobrado (room where the head of the family slept). The cistern is high, according to the traditional way. Stone carved predominates in corners, doors and windows. At the top: the characteristic holes for birds and pigeons to nest.

ARQUITECTURA
Esta vivienda solariega es una muestra genuina de la arquitectura popular rural de la poca. Est edificada a la manera tradicional canaria, en forma de U y orientada al poniente. Cerrada por un alto muro de piedra, tiene carpintera de madera de tea; y techos de 3 y 4 aguas, cubiertos con tejas curvas. En torno a su amplio patio central empedrado se distribuyen las estancias. Una gran escalera de piedra labrada llega hasta el sobrado (habitacin donde dorma el cabeza de familia). El aljibe est elevado, segn la forma tradicional. Predomina la piedra labrada en esquinas, puertas y ventanas. En lo alto: los caractersticos agujeros para que aniden los pjaros y palomas.

CURRENT SITUATION
In 1986, they start the negotiations to declare the House Monument of Historic-Artistic Interest. Nowadays, it houses the departments of Culture, Education and Sports of the City Council of San Bartolom. Several cultural activities are carried out in the building, being the meeting point for folk music, the municipal band, the local theatre groups and the choral. Among the activities carried out in the place stand out the applications for civil weddings, dressmaking of traditional costumes workshops and painting lessons.

SITUACIN ACTUAL
En 1986 se inici el expediente para la declaracin de Monumento Histrico-Artstico. Alberga los departamentos de Cultura, Educacin y Deportes del Ayuntamiento de San Bartolom. Se realizan diversas actividades culturales, siendo el punto de encuentro para el folklore, la banda de msica, los grupos de teatro y la coral. Destacan los talleres de corte y confeccin de trajes tpicos y sus clases de pintura.
