esde la torre de incendios cercana
al Palacio se obtiene una increible
vista de la marisma. Temprano,
cuando el sol apenas apunta, los colores
del cielo y el agua inician un diálogo de
grises cálidos y amarillos. El naranja va
invadiendo los tonos sombríos de la tierra
en mi dirección y dibujando los contornos
de los objetos que encuentra a su paso.
Poco a poco, el verde se anima, la luz
invade todo y la magia desaparece.
Recuerdo la vista del delta del Copper
en Alaska. Un alce avanzaba penosamente
por la marisma y desde la avioneta parecía
perdido en mitad de aquella inmensidad
de agua y vegetación.
Las grandes áreas cenagosas me crean
una sensación de desamparo muy similar
a la que me producen los desiertos. Un
espacio que la mirada no abarca y de
monótona alternancia de agua y tierra,
apenas afirmada. Sólo el vuelo nos
permite un atisbo de sus confines y de su
belleza.

Palace I have an incredible view of
the marsh. Early, when the sun
hardly shines, the colours of the sky and
water begin a dialogue of warm grey and
yellow. Orange is invading the sombre
tones of the earth, drawing the contours of
objects on its way to where I stand.
Gradually the green is enhanced, the day
invades everything and magic disappears.
I remember the view of the Copper
Delta in Alaska. A moose trudged through
the marsh, and from the air it appeared
lost in the middle of that immensity
between water and vegetation.
The large marshy areas give me a
feeling of helplessness very similar to that
produced by the vast deserts. A space the
eyes can't cover, a monotonous alternation
of water and land. Only an air view allows
us a glimpse of its boundaries and its
beauty.

Los patos buceadores buscan el centro de
la laguna en la Dehesa de Abajo. Un día
gris y ventoso les acerca hacia la carretera
desde donde puedo conseguir una vista
mejor de sus chapoteos y zambullidas.
Además de malvasías, colorados y
porrones veo también algunos rabudos y
otros patos de superficie como los
elegantes frisos, que buscan las zonas
menos profundas para pastar y los bordes
de las isletas para sestear.
Algunos machos de malvasía estiran el
cuello y alzan la cola al pasar cerca de las
hembras, pero aún falta tiempo para que
empiecen seriamente a cortejarlas.
El aire está limpio y los perfiles de las aves
llegan netamente hasta mi posición, pero
los colores pierden intensidad en esta luz
grisácea de las primeras horas de la tarde.
Mejor tal vez, así no me distraen las
sutilezas del color para hacer apuntes de
actitudes y proporciones.
Unos rayos de sol rompen el manto
nuboso, alumbrando a un par de cucharas
que sestean y me dan un buen motivo
para hacer un apunte. Todo respira reposo
hasta que descubro un ojo amarillo,
vigilante. Me proporciona el centro de
atención que estaba buscando en una
imagen poco usual.

Diving ducks find their place in the
middle of the lagoon at Dehesa de Abajo.
A grey and windy day pushes them to the
shore by the roadside, where I can get
better views of their splashes and dives.
Besides White-headed, Pochard and Red-
crested ducks, I can see some Pintails and
other surface waterfowl like the elegant
Gadwalls, looking for shallower waters for
grazing and the shores of the islets for a
nap.
Some of the males of White-headed ducks
stretch their necks and raise up the tail
when passing near the females but it is
still is too early for a serious attempt at
courting.
The air is clean and the shapes of the birds
come neatly to me through the spotting
scope, but the colours loose definition in
this early evening greyish light. Better
perhaps, I won't be distracted by the
subtle changes of colour when trying to do
sketches of attitudes and proportions.
Some sun beams find their way through
the clouds, revealing a pair of resting
Shovelers and giving me a good subject
for a painting. Everything suggests
quietness until I discover a yellow
watchful eye. It gives me the centre of
attention that I needed.

Hace más de media hora que permanezco
sentado, un poco alejado del regato, no
lejos de los almajos donde sestean los
búhos campestres, fuera de mi vista. Estas
esperas no me resultan aburridas, a veces
incluso una visita inesperada, me hace
perder la noción del asunto que me había
llevado a aquél aguardo y me distrae de
mi empeño original. En esta ocasión no
consigo interesarme por los habituales
aguiluchos laguneros, las garcetas y los
numerosos mosquiteros que contribuyen a
librarme de insectos. Durante un rato me
distraigo dibujando una de las terreras que
recorren el sendero. Estoy a punto de dar
por finalizada la espera cuando el paso de
un ruidoso todo-terreno, levanta dos
búhos que se camuflaban en el margen del
canal.
Uno de ellos se pierde en dirección a la
marisma, pero el segundo se aplasta entre
los almajos, desde donde le veo asomar la
cabeza. El telescopio, una vez más, me
permite una visión más que decente del ave.

For nearly half and hour I've been sitting
by the brook's bank, not too far from the
field behind the fence where the wintering
short eared owls are taking their daily nap
This stalks don't bore me at all, even
sometimes an unexpected visitor manages
to catch my attention and leads me to
forget the original purpose of my waiting.
But this time I can't find appeal in the
flying marsh harriers, the egrets and the
many chiffchaffs that help me to get rid of
some of the mosquitoes. For a while, I
amuse myself sketching one of the Short-
toed Larks that run the path. I'm about to
quit when a noisy 4WD comes roaring and
scaring off two of the owls that were
hiding in the stream margin. One of them
flies away to the marsh behind my
position. The other goes ducking amongst
the almajos where I can see it popping the
head out from time to time. The telescope,
again, proves to be a useful tool, and
allows me to have a good view of the bird.

 El esmerejón aparece como un regalo
inesperado durante una visita al Lucio del
Lobo. Éste tiene un extraño diseño ventral,
muy marcado hacia los flancos, casi como
el de una hembra. No había reparado en
ello hasta volver a mi habitación y repasar
los detalles en una guía de campo. Ignoro
si hay diferencias individuales en esta
especie.
Es más bien una especie de tierra firme, de
los matorrales y zonas abiertas, aunque en
estos parajes visita la marisma para cazar.

The Merlin appears as an unexpected gift

during a visit to the Lucio del Lobo. This
one has an unusual ventral design more
marked toward the flanks, almost like a
female. I hadn't noticed it until I returned
to my room when I go over the details in a
field guide. I do not know if there are
individual differences in this species.
It is rather a bird of mainland that likes the
bushes and open areas, although in this
area it also visits the marsh for hunting.

Hay un aguilucho lagunero posado lejos
de mi puesto de observación. Su oscuro
antifaz y la franja clara del pecho indican
que se trata de una hembra, pero hay
algunos detalles del plumaje que no
parecen corresponder a un ave adulta. Tal
vez se trata de una hembra en su segundo
año de vida. Como no hay mucha
actividad en la charca más próxima me
pongo a trabajar con el aguilucho,
intentando describir el colorido del
plumaje. La tarea no es fácil por la
distancia. Por suerte, el día no es caluroso
y el aire es limpio y transparente.
Los laguneros presentan muchas
variaciones de color, incluso en el del iris
de los ojos. A pesar del esfuerzo no
consigo la certeza de que se trate de una
hembra joven. Finalmente comienza a caer
una fina lluvia y debo buscar resguardo.

There is a Marsh Harrier perched on a
post, far from my stand. Its dark mask and
pale chest band suggest a female but some
details of the plumage do not correspond
to that of an adult bird. It may well be a
female on her second year. As there is not
much activity in the near by pond I start to
work on several sketches of the Harrier,
trying to describe its look. Luckily the air
is clean and fresh and I manage to see the
bird quite well in spite of the distance.
Marsh Harriers show some colour
variations, even in the iris. I can not get
evidence to be sure that it is really a young
bird. Finally a light rain starts to fall and I
must look for cover.

 El carrizo, aparentemente desierto oculta
decenas de miradas furtivas. Al explorar
con detenimiento el borde del cañizal, el
telescopio me revela la presencia de un
observador lejano. A cien metros de mi
posición, una garza real se asoma y
esconde, alternando la siesta con la vigilia.
Me interesa más esta silueta cautelosa y su
pequeño entorno protector que las figuras
expuestas y activas de otras aves
próximas.

The reed bed, apparently empty, is full of
stealthy looks. A careful look through the
telescope at the first lines of reed reveals a
watchful presence. At a distance of
hundred meters a Grey Heron sticks out
its head and then hides, alternating siesta
and watchfulness. I am more interested in
its cautious lines and its protective
environment than in the active and clear Garcetas entre el carrizo

El calamón que estuvo tan amenazado en
España es relativamente común ahora en
las marismas, como el morito y la
malvasía. Uno se pregunta cómo puede ser
tan sencillo a veces recuperar las
poblaciones de algunas especies. Casi
bastó con dejar de molestarle, prohibir la
caza en las escasas zonas donde aún criaba
y gestionar un poco mejor los humedales.
Lo he visto criar en charcas de centrales
nucleares en Extremadura y pastando en
el cesped de un campo de golf en el sur de
Portugal, luciendo esa increíble mezcla de
azul cerúleo y ultramar francés, con la cual
me peleo cada vez que quiero pintarlo.
He tirado tres apuntes intentado encontrar
el equilibrio entre el destello azul y los
ocres amarillos encendidos del carrizo. Es
la luz lo que intento encontrar, no el
detalle ornitológico. Trato de describir un
instante breve, durante el cual la masa de
plumas se asoma al borde del carrizo
inundado de sol ¿Cómo es posible que un
ave tan llamativa se desvanezca entre los
verdes, amarillos y pardos del cañizal?

The Purple Gallinule that was so
threatened in Spain is now fairly common
in marshes, as are the Glossy Ibis and the
White-headed Duck. One wonders how it
can be sometimes so easy to recover the
stocks of some species. It was enough to
stop bothering them, to ban the hunting in
the few areas where they still bred and to
improve the management of some
wetlands. I've seen it breeding in pools of
nuclear power plants in Extremadura and
grazing on the lawn of a golf course in
southern Portugal, wearing this incredible
mix of cerulean blue and French
ultramarine, with which I fight every time
I want to paint it.
I've discarded three watercolours trying to
find the balance between the flashing blue
and the yellow ochre of the reed. It is the
light what I'm trying to find, not the
ornithological detail. I'd like to describe a
brief moment during which the mass of
feathers shows at the edge of the sun-
drenched reed bed. How can such a
conspicuous bird be able to fade among
the green, yellow and brown of the plants?

people. I am fascinated by the contortions
of the shovelers cleaning themselves and I
try to disentangle the line of a flamingo's
neck.
As time goes by, the activity decreases and
more and more birds come to rest and
preen their feathers.
With the last light of the day I sketch the
colours of sunset.

The rhythms in birds' activity and the
different colouring due to the changing
light have me bound to the bank of the
marsh. I become aware of the passage of
time when I try to stand up and find
myself stiff or when I loose concentration
because my fingers become numb with the
cold.
I fill pages and pages with sketches of
different attitudes of grey herons,
shovelers, spoonbills and other water

Los ritmos de actividad de las aves y los
cambios de color con las diferentes luces
me atan al borde de la marisma durante
horas. Sólo soy consciente del paso del
tiempo cuando intento incorporarme y me
encuentro anquilosado, o cuando pierdo la
concentración y descubro que el frío se me
ha metido en los huesos.
Lleno hojas y hojas del cuaderno con
apuntes de actitudes de garzas, cucharas,
espátulas y otras acuáticas. Me pregunto si
todo ello tendrá el mismo interés para
otras personas, pero yo me siento
fascinado por las extravagantes

Caballos y vacas componen una típica
escena marismeña. Prácticamente libres,
los hatos recorren las zonas encharcadas y
las vetas.
Anualmente, los criadores almonteños,
acuden a la marisma para reunir el ganado
y separar a las hembras. La “saca de las
yeguas” es una notable fiesta popular.
Una yegua de color poco usual descansa a
la sombra de un arbusto y atrae mi
atención mientras busco espátulas en el
borde del aguazal.

Horses and cows make up a typical marsh

scene. Virtually free, the herds roam the
flooded areas and the dryland.
Each year, the farmers from Almonte, go
to the marsh to gather the livestock and
separate the mares. The “saca de las
yeguas” is a notorious celebration.
A white mare rests in the shade of a bush.
She has an unusual colour and catches my
attention while looking for spoonbills on
the edge of the marsh.

La llegada hasta el Cerrado Garrido por el
muro de la FAO se me hace interminable.
No es sólo por el largo recorrido desde El
Rocío, sino por la imposibilidad de pasar
de largo sin detenerme ante cada recodo
del camino que bordea el brazo del río.
Cada poco trecho aparecen garzas
imperiales, garcillas cangrejeras, moritos,
espátulas, y diversas rapaces. Veo un
elegante ratonero de blanquísimo plumaje
y un águila culebrera que se empeña en
alejarse cada vez que sobrepaso su
distancia de alerta cargado con el
telescopio.

The road to Cerro Garrido that runs by the
FAO wall seems endless, not only because
it's a long way from El Rocío, but also
because it's impossible not to stop at every
turn of the road along the banks of the
river. Purple Heron, Squacco Heron,
Glossy Ibis, Spoonbills and different birds
of prey keep showing up. I watch an
elegant Buzzard in its unusual snow white
plumage and a Short-toed Eagle that keeps
moving backwards every time I reach its
alarm distance.

SEA AND SAND
U na mujer de formas rotundas arrastra
un rastrillo para arrancar coquinas de
la arena. Aparte de ésto y el paso ocasional
de algún todoterreno de la guardería del
parque, la actividad en la playa se reduce
al movimiento de las olas y las idas y
venidas de las distintas especies de aves.
Gaviotas, charranes, ostreros, chorlitejos,
andarríos, vuelvepiedras y, lejos, oscilando
como flotadores en una bañera, un bando
de negrones que se difumina en la
distancia. Siempre están ahí en invierno,
basta barrer el horizonte cercano con el
telescopio para localizar un bando de
puntos negros que, con un poco de suerte
y si el mar está agitado, se aproximan un
poco a la costa, a tiro de lápiz y cuaderno.
Me siento a una distancia prudente de
Torre Carboneros, desparramo el equipo
por la arena y pido a los cielos que no
comience la tormenta que el plomizo color
de las nubes promete.
A woman of round forms drags a rake
near the shore, ploughing up cockles
from the sand. Apart from this and the
occasional car from the Park, the activity
on the beach is reduced to the movement
of the waves and the different species of
birds: gulls, terns, oystercatchers, plovers,
sanderlings, turnstones and, far in the
distance, swinging like a children's toy in
the tub, a flotilla of common scoters. They
are always there in winter. One just need
to scan the horizon with the scope to spot
a group of dark silhouettes, and if you are
lucky and the sea is rough they'll get close
to the shore, enough to let you draw some
sketches.
I sit at a reasonable distance from Torre
Carboneros and the falcon nest, I spread
up all my stuff on the sand and pray to the
Lord that the storm the lead-grey clouds
seems to herald, doesn't start.

Hacia mediados del siglo XVI, se inició la
construcción de una línea de fortalezas a
lo largo de toda la costa andaluza que
servían como torres de vigilancia ya que
los piratas berberiscos suponían un grave
riesgo para las pequeñas poblaciones de la
costa y los barcos de pesca que faenaban
cerca de ella. Felipe II ordenó la
construcción de torres de vigía que dieran
la alarma por medio del sonido de
caracolas o encendiendo hogueras en lo
alto. Se estableció un impuesto especial
sobre la pesca para su construcción y
mantenimiento y se creó un cuerpo de
infantería de costa para perseguir a los
72 piratas y el contrabando.
Son pocas las construcciones de este tipo
que aún persisten, y en la costa de
Matalascañas la más conocida es Torre
Carboneros, donde montan guardia desde
hace muchos años, los halcones
peregrinos.

During the 16th Century a succession of
strongholds were built all along the
Andalusian coast to be used as
watchtowers against pirates.
The Berber pirates were a great danger to
the small towns and their fishermen. King
Felipe II ordered the watchtowers to be
built so that the people could be warned of
the pirates' approach. The warning was
made by blowing seashells during the day
and with bonfires by night. There was a
special tax on fishing for the building and
maintenance of these towers and to pay
for an infantry coastguard corps to fight
pirates and smugglers.
Very few of these towers are still standing.
In the coast of Matalascañas the best
known is Torre Carboneros where for
many years the Peregrine Falcons are
keeping watch.

 En invierno, los charranes patinegros
forman grupos en la playa con las
gaviotas, en formación y de cara al viento,
en una actitud que resalta aún más el
agudo puñal de su negro pico.
Junto a ellos veo un par de gaviotas de
Audouin, la especie que durante unos
años, a finales de los 70, me dediqué a
estudiar en las islas Chafarinas. Eran unas
hermosas desconocidas; noctámbulas que
formaban una impresionante algarabía en
las noches de primavera.
Los grupos de aves en la playa son un reto
artístico interesante. Si quiero hacer una
composición sobre el papel tengo que
tomar buena nota de la distribución y las
distancias entre las aves. Los charranes
apretados guardan una respetuosa
distancia con las gaviotas y el viento da
forma al grupo y a cada ave en particular.

The Sandwich Terns gather on the shore
with small groups of gulls, facing the wind
in an attitude that makes more prominent
the sharp dagger of his black bill.
Near to them I see two Audouin's Gulls,
the species that I studied for several years,
at the end of the 70's in Chafarinas islands.
When I met them for the first time, they
were beautiful, unknown wanderers
making an incredible racket in the colony
during the summer nights.
The groups of birds on the shore are an
interesting challenge for an artist. If I want
to paint a composition on paper I have to
make a careful study of distribution and
individual distances of birds. The terns
keep a respectful distance with the gulls
and the wind shapes the contours of the Chorlitejo patinegro / Kentish Plover

TIERRA FIRME

MAINLAND
Toda la mañana ha estado presente la
niebla, inundando el matorral, diluyendo
las formas y poblándolo de figuras
fantasmales. No es un buen momento para
pintar aves que se confunden con el
monócromo paisaje y se desplazan,
silenciosas y grises, entre el ramaje.
Aparece, de repente una figura altiva,
recortada contra el fondo lechoso, sin
apenas más relieve que el contraste de su
poderosa cornamenta y su maciza silueta,
olfateando el aire denso y húmedo en mi
dirección. Durante un breve lapso de
tiempo se mueve con la dignidad y el
empaque de un bronce viviente, hasta que
un ligero temblor de sus orejas anuncia
que he sido descubierto. Toda la pesadez y
cautela desaparecen y en un abrir y cerrar
de ojos la figura se funde y deshace,
tragada por la misma niebla de la que
surgió, dejándome en la duda de si
realmente estuvo allí.

The mist has been present all morning,
flooding the maquis, fading its outlines
and filling it with ghostly shapes. This is
not the best moment to sketch birds: they
merge with the monochrome landscape,
moving around quietly and greyish
among the foliage. Suddenly an arrogant
silhouette springs up, outlined against the
milky background, hardly detachable
from it but for its strong antlers and
massif body, smelling the dense and wet
atmosphere in my direction. For a small
lapse of time it moves with the dignity
and manners of a living bronze, until a
slight trembling of its ears reveals that I
have been detected. All the heaviness and
caution disappear and in the twinkle of
the eye, the silhouette melts and vanishes,
swallowed by the same mist it came from,
leaving me in the doubt whether it had
really been there.

Consigo permiso para visitar a Astrid
Vargas y al equipo que se encarga de la
cría en cautividad del lince del que apenas
quedan doscientos ejemplares. No hay
forma mejor de observar a placer a estos
gatos sin molestarlos, ya que toparse con
uno de ellos es francamente difícil y no da
mucho tiempo a tomar apuntes.
Morena, la veterana lincesa, tiene ya
dieciocho años y está llena de achaques,
pero es de una extraordinaria belleza. Por
el lado juvenil, Dátil y Dama parecen
estar profundamente enamorados y
82 permanecen juntos y apretujados.

I'm allowed to visit the breeding-in-
captivity centre, where Astrid Vargas leads
a resourceful and enthusiastic team of
researchers. This is the best way to watch
them at ease without disturbing them.
There are hardly two hundred lynx in the
wild and it's not easy to run into one of
them to make some sketches.
Morena, the old female is already
eighteen; she's full of ailments, but still
beautiful. On the young side, Datil and
Dama (Date and Lady) seem to be deeply
in love and stay close each other most of Dátil y Dama / Date & Lady

La colonia de cigüeñas de Dehesa de
Abajo está casi al completo, aunque no ha
comenzado la cría. Grupos de ellas
recorren las orillas de la laguna en busca
de comida mientras otras montan guardia
en el nido. La población de cigüeñas de
Doñana es de unas 1.000 parejas, pero en
invierno llegan a juntarse hasta 15.000
individuos que buscan alimento en
basureros y arrozales.
Mientras hago una acuarela del nido de
cigüeña que jalona el camino de acceso al
centro de información, aparece una Águila
Calzada. Es un ave adulta en fase de color
claro y durante un buen rato me
sobrevuela, dejándome dibujarla. En
Doñana inverna un pequeño grupo de
calzadas, quizás no más de 50, y he tenido
la suerte de ver a una de ellas.

Most of the White Stork(s) couples are
already at the colony of Dehesa de Abajo,
although breeding hasn't started yet.
Groups of them wander around the
lagoon, searching for food, while their
mates guard the nest.
Doñana's population of this species
reaches 1.000 pairs, but in winter, nearly
15.000 gather in the landfills and rice
paddies.
A Booted Eagle overflies me while I work
out a watercolour of one of the nests near
to the information centre. It is an adult
bird in pale form, one of the 50 or less
individuals that winter in this area.

 Ya está atardeciendo cuando voy de
regreso hacia El Rocío, pero quiero hacer
un apunte de paisaje con elementos
humanos. La ventaja de la acuarela frente
a la fotografía es que uno puede eliminar o
modificar aquellos elementos del paisaje
que no le interesan. Yo decido quitar un
alto poste metálico delante de la casa.
Al ir hacia el Centro José Antonio Valverde
vi una Garceta Grande en la marisma a la
izquierda del camino, pero se voló
rápidamente. Vuelvo a encontrarla, un
poco más adelante de donde dibujé al
avetoro, pero ahora estoy avisado y me
detengo despacio para evitar asustarla. No
está muy confiada, pero al menos me deja
unos minutos para hacerle un retrato sin
bajar del coche.

It is late afternoon when I'm driving back
to El Rocio, but I still want to make a
sketch of landscape with some human
constructions. Compared to photography
the watercolour has the advantage that
you can eliminate or modify those
elements that do not interest you. I decide
to remove a large metal pole in front of the
house.
On my way to the Centro José Antonio
Valverde, I saw a Great Egret in the marsh
to the left of the road, but it quickly flew
away. Now I find it not far from the place I
drew the Bittern. I am advised now and
stop slowly to avoid scaring it off. It's not
very confident, but at least it gave me a few
minutes to portray it from inside the car.

Con las últimas luces, llegan los intrusos
de la tierra firme. Merodeadores de la
marisma, fantasmas de las dunas y de
cualquier medio donde puedan hallar algo
de alimento: un resto de pescado, alguna
raíz jugosa, setas o insectos pueden
completar la cena. Pero los jabalíes
también se arriman al barrizal para
revolcarse, protegiéndose de insectos o
infecciones provocadas por las peleas.
Los investigadores están preocupados por
la abundancia de estos ungulados en el
Parque Nacional ya que pueden actuar
como reservorios de la tuberculosis bovina
que también puede afectar a los linces.
Desde la orilla, cerca del palacio, alcanzo a
ver dos machos jóvenes que caminan
marisma adentro procedentes del bosque.
Los patos que mordisquean la vegetación
superficial, se detienen un momento para
observar su cansino trotecillo, antes de que
su figura se difumine y se confundan con
el fondo grisáceo.

Twilight brings the outsiders from the
mainland. Marauders of the marsh, ghosts
of the dunes, the beach or whatever site
where they can find some food: the
leftovers of a fish, some juicy root, a
mushroom or an insect can be part of the
menu. But the wild boars also come to
wallow on the mud, to get rid of parasites
and to cure the wounds produced during
their fights.
The researchers are worried about the
abundance of these ungulates in the
National Park, as they can be reservoirs of
the cow's tuberculosis which is likely to
affect also the lynx.
From the shore, near to the palace, I
manage to see two young adults, walking
into the marsh and coming from the
nearby forest.
The ducks stop their feeding for a while,
looking at their weary trot, before they
disappear and melt with the greyish
background.

ODIEL MARSHES

L as marismas del Odiel son el otro gran

humedal de la costa de Huelva. Pese a
ser un espacio declarado Reserva de
Biosfera por la UNESCO no está libre de
amenazas. Muy pocos vehículos parecen
respetar las limitaciones de velocidad en la
carretera que recorre el dique, por la que
circulan también camiones de gran
tonelaje cargados de escombros. Desde esa
misma carretera se pueden ver gran
cantidad de limícolas, charranes y
gaviotas y existen colonias de cría en los

bordes arenosos. No es difícil imaginar el
valor ornitológico que tendría este paraje
si hubiera una vigilancia más cuidadosa
del trasiego de personas y vehículos.
Un macho de charrancito corteja, con más
voluntad que éxito, a la hembra. Estirado
y quejumbroso la persigue con el mejor
regalo que ha podido encontrar: un
diminuto pececito que cuelga del pico.
Cuando hay muchas parejas de esta
especie ya incubando, parece que este
inexperto macho pasará la temporada de
cría en blanco.

he other large wetland of Huelva's
coast is the Odiel marsh. Although it
was declared Biological Reserve by
UNESCO, this natural area is not free of
threats. Few drivers seems to respect the
speed limits on the road that goes over the
breakwater, even the heavy lorries loaded
with debris run fast. From this same road,
one can see a good deal of waders, terns
and gulls and there are breeding colonies
of terns and pratincoles on the sandy
shores. We can well imagine the
ornithological value of this spot if there
was a better control over the movement of
people and vehicles.
A male Little Tern is courting a possible
mate with more willingness that success.
Stiff necked and whining he chases her
with the best gift he could ever find: a
small fish that hangs down in her bill.
Whilst there are many couples of this
species already incubating it seems that
this inexpert young one will be a bachelor
for a while.

Al recorrer con los prismáticos el grupo de
gaviotas que festonea la orilla, encuentro
un personaje inesperado: algo separada de
las demás aves, con un desdibujado
capirote negro y el pico agudo y rojo,
como un puñal ensangrentado. No hay
duda de que se trata de una pagaza
piquirroja, tal vez una de las que invernan
en la costa andaluza o quizás un adulto
rezagado en su regreso a las colonias de
cría en el Báltico. Más grande que un
charrán patinegro, y casi del tamaño de la
joven gaviota sombría que reposa a su
lado y por la que aparenta sentir estima,
parece producir un cierto respeto a sus
compañeras de playa.
While observing with binoculars the group
of gulls festooning the shore, I find an
unexpected visitor: a bit apart from the
other birds, with a blurred hood and a
sharp and red bill, like a blooded dagger.
No doubt it is a Caspian Tern, maybe one
of those that winter in the Andalusian
coast or perhaps a delayed adult in its way
to the breeding colonies in the Baltic Sea.
Bigger than a Sandwich Tern, nearly of the
size of the young Black-backed Gull that
stands by its side and for which it shows
some attachment, it seems to induce some
respect to the other seabirds on the shore.
