Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009

Indonesian UFO Case Review 2009

Overview
The following report comprised 38 cases of reported UFO sightings & related phenomena collected throughout the year 2009 by BETA UFO group 1 . The data is collected from various reports coming in through the groups mailing list as well as from direct testimonies received privately by researchers associated with the group. The major aim of the analysis is to provide a general outlook of the data that can function as a stepping stone for more detailed studies in the future. The data analysis is focused on three main features that are considered typical within UAP/UFO data analysis. The three features are: types of sightings regional distribution of sightings SVP-rating measurement. A major constraint is that the data might very well represent only a small portion of all UFO sightings cases in the country in 2009. It has been noted from time to time that people do tend to report cases through other means than BETA UFO. A significant number of reports also tend to come up years after it happened.

Outline
The effort to compile local reports of unidentified flying object (UFO) & its related phenomena is actually nothing new in the development of Indonesias ufology. At least since the 1950s various cases across the country have been gathered and filed by pioneering ufologist Air Vice-Marshall (ret.) J. Salatun. A similar effort has also been taken up since the late 1990s by BETA UFO community, the countrys prominent ufology group to date. Nevertheless, an effort to provide a general analysis/review of the compiled local data has yet to surface. J. Salatuns seminal book on ufology, 'Menyingkap Rahasia Piring Terbang' (Unveiling the Flying Saucer's Secret) published in 1960, did provide a quite detailed analysis of the UFO phenomena. However it was done with greater emphasis on the global rather than the local nature of the subject. Meanwhile, data compiling by BETA UFO has tended to focus more on the filing of cases. Although providing a good basic description and chronological record of local events, it has yet to provide any general analysis. It is this apparent gap within the local UFO database analysis that this report will now try to address. This is a rudimentary and non-exhaustive report done with limited resources particularly time. Nevertheless, as rudimentary as it is, the general analysis provided here will hopefully be able to function as a basis for future studies. Particularly studies connected to BETA UFO communitys effort in developing local ufology. Knowledge of the UFO phenomenon has developed by leaps and bounds in the country in the past few years. An ever increasing interest from both the general public and media has

The data is compiled in late 2009 and was finished by March 2010. The latest revised version (as presented in the Appendix) was finished in late August 2010. Revision was mostly made on details of the reports.

manifested itself, much of which has also been directed to BETA UFO as a prominent source for information. In such a context, higher quality data-analysis from BETA UFO will definitely provide a better foundation for the countrys growing interest in ufology.

Review
A) Types of sightings A significant amount of the UAP/UFO sighting cases compiled in 2009 (19 cases/50%) involved an FB1 type of phenomenon (See Figure 1). Coming at second place (9 cases/23.68%) is the MA1 category that comprises objects that showed disrupted trajectory (maneuvers). In third place is the AN1 category (8 cases/21.03%) that stands for anomalies such as amorphous lights and unexplained explosions/sounds.

Figure 1 Types of Sightings

Although the FB1 basically stands for unidentified objects that fly-by through the sky the compiled data involves more movement than that. Some objects are reported to be hovering and swirling in a stationary manner while at least one case involves objects that just appeared out of nowhere on the sky. Such cases are treated as fly-by simply for the simplicity of data grouping. Table-1 lists the various descriptions that comprised the FB1 classification in this report. Table-1 FB1 Descriptions Description Hovering Flying with a certain direction: North to South South to North To the North West Swirling Flying around Flying by (in tremendous speed) Unknown: No information given Object(s) just appeared on the sky Total

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009

It should also be noted that at least one of the FB1 case (Case No. 26 - September 2009; Villa Pondok Remaja, Puncak holiday resort; Cianjur regency; West Java) has been analyzed as a possible blurfo phenomena (where a normal object got caught as a blurry, UFO-looking image on photo). The MA1 category, involving maneuvering unidentified objects, also showed colorful descriptions in each reported case as outlined in Table-2. One of the cases (Case No. 31 October 27 2009; GBA residential complex; Bojongsoang district; Bandung regency; West Java province) clearly indicated a sign of intelligent control of the aerial object as it was said to be making an L-shaped maneuver. The said case also involved alleged physical effect to the witness mobile phone (causing it to become dysfunctional during sighting) which is rarely reported in Indonesia. Table-2 MA1 Descriptions Description Objects coming to an abrupt stop to hover motionless in mid air Object moved downwards then upwards Objects moved erratically; up and down; zigzagging; making abrupt acceleration and deceleration Object made L-shaped maneuver Total

Frequency 4 1 3 1 9 (23.68%)

The AN1 category mostly involves amorphous lights seen in the sky although with differing details (such as the types of colors and/or movement seen during the sighting). A case that seemingly has no precedence yet in the countrys UFO case history is the one where an unexplained sound was heard by several witnesses (Case No. 5 - February 29, 2009; Cilacap regency; Central Java province) without any logical source to be found. Table-3 AN1 Descriptions Description A loud; echoing; alarm-like sound Star-like objects merging with the moon and changing its appearance An object shaped like a flattened balloon, surrounded by bright-white light Amorphous lights Reddish, triangular-shaped object hovering in the sky Total

Frequency 1 1 1 4 1 8 (21.03%)

In the context of AN1 cases, one case of amorphous light sighting (Case No. 28 - October 15/16, 2009; the skies over Bantul; Yogyakarta) has been proven to be a natural phenomenon prior to this report writing. The case has been proven to be a simple reflection of sunlight on an airplane wing after a similar photo was replicated by a BETA UFO member in February 2010.

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009

B) Regional Distribution The 2009 compiled data showed a predominant number of cases (26 cases/68.42%) were reported in the islands of Java and Sumatra (8 cases/21.05%). In Java Island itself (see Figure 3) a majority of the cases were reported from West Java province (12 cases/46.15%) and the capital city, Jakarta (5 cases/19.23%). The regional distribution pattern seemed to coincide with Java Islands relatively higher exposure to UFO subjects (from the media & ufology groups). It might also represent the unique sociological trait of the island as the geopolitical center of the country where development efforts has always been concentrated. Java is also known as the most densely populated area among the five major islands of the Indonesian archipelago (Java; Sumatra; Kalimantan; Sulawesi; Papua) something that might contribute to the larger number of reports coming from the region.

We stJava(12 ) Banten(2 ) Jakarta(5) CentralJava(2) Yogyakarta(2) EastJava(3)

Figure 2 - Regions (Islands)

Figure 3 Regions (Java)

The regional distribution of reported cases in 2009 also showed that only a small number of cases (14 cases/36.84%) are reported from the urban areas. In this area, the city of Jakarta and Bandung as noted in the pioneering research of J. Salatun again figured quite prominently as areas with quite a few UFO case reports (each with 5 [35.71%] and 4 [28.57%] cases respectively). C) SVP Rating The SVP rating for most of the cases compiled in 2009 showed that most of them (18 cases/47.37%) are fairly doubtful cases. These are cases that would only need a slight alteration of one of the parameter to have them explained as natural or non-UFO related phenomena. On top of that only 2 cases (5.26%) actually involved site visitation by someone familiar with the UFO phenomena.

The data seemed to express the major constraints faced by the BETA UFO community in compiling and analyzing the various reports coming from across the country. These are the problem of manpower (as most members are not field researchers); time (with most members juggling between work and ufology) and geographical distance (especially those in remote areas outside of Java Island). This problem, of course, is not exclusive to BETA UFO or Indonesia in particular. On a different perspective, the data also express the good quality of field research work that the group has done when it does manage to do so. One case (Case No. 28 - October 15/16; Bantul; Yogyakarta) was proven to be a simple light reflection by a BETA UFO researcher despite supportive comment from the countrys space and aeronautics agency for the case to be a genuine UFO (see footnote on case entry in the appendix). Another case (Case No. 31 - October 27 2009; GBA residential complex; Bojongsoang district; Bandung regency; West Java province) investigated by BETA UFOs affiliated group, UFOnesia showed that despite the mistaken identification of a normal mundane object (a kite) there was also sighting of an unidentified object in the area. Both instances showed the groups capability in carrying out good basic investigations.

Appendix Compiled sightings of UFO and UFO-related Phenomena in Indonesia 2009

No. 1. Time and Location January 1, 2009. Sunda strait, + 1025 minutes off Bakaheuni port in Lampung province, Sumatra island. Event and Circumstances A strange object was captured in a photograph made by a passenger of a ferry boat heading to Merak port in Banten province, Java island. Object was photographed with an Olympus E-300 Digital SLR camera under a cloudy sky. The strange aerial object was not seen until the photo was uploaded to a computer about 2 weeks later. It showed a cylindrical object hovering high above a passing ferry boat that was the actual focus of the photo. The object was only seen in one frame/shot although another shot was taken just seconds after it, indicating a fast moving object. A witness saw and videotaped an object that looked like two white, wingless, cylindrical capsules, joined/connected together by a dark band. It was flying very fast from North to South without a sound. The object left behind a trail of what appeared to be white smoke. The same witness from case no.2 saw the same cigar-shaped object in the same area. Classification 2 Note Photo and case were published on BETA UFOs free th edition (March e-zine 16 2009). The classification refers to the system of classification expounded by Jacques Valle, categorizing the UFO and UFO-related phenomena into 20 sub- types from 5 major types (AN for Anomaly; MA for maneuvers; FB for fly by; CE for close encounters) as can be seen in his 1990 book Confrontations. A brief online description is also available from http://www.ufoevidence.org/documents/doc1553.htm

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009 No. 4. Time and Location February 15, 2009. Cikampek toll road (between the cities of Bandung and Jakarta), toll road exit in Bekasi regency, West Java, at around 11 PM Event and Circumstances Two witnesses, driving from Bandung to Jakarta, saw a strange aerial object near the Bekasi toll road exit gate. The object was brightly lit, has an oval/disc like shape, seen hovering motionless at a 30 degrees angle from the horizon, emanating a white neon-like light. Object disappeared as witnesses came closer to its position. Two witnesses heard a loud echoing sound, resembling the alarm sound of truck/heavy machinery moving in reverse gear around their home and yet saw no such thing anywhere around the area. Several students from the Hang Kasturi junior high school saw a brightly-lit yellow disc flying from North to South for about 5 minutes. No photos or videos were made of the object. Two witnesses (husband and wife) saw a bright aerial object, glowing with red-yellow-white colors, from their home. Object was flying from West to South West at an angle of about 30 degrees from the horizon, in tremendous speed. Object then came to an abrupt stop and hovered motionless for several minutes before disappearing from view behind some clouds. An airplane passed by at around 7:20 PM and both witnesses could tell the difference between it and the previously seen aerial object. Classification Note

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009 No. 8. Time and Location April 14, 2009. Depok regency, West Java province, at around 7:40 PM. Event and Circumstances The same witnesses from previous case saw a bright object flying by very fast from West to South West for about 20 seconds. The object abruptly reduced speed and came to a full stop just before disappearing from view behind some clouds. A group of witnesses, in a moving vehicle, saw a bright orange-lit object in the sky. Object was videotaped as it moved downwards like a meteorite. The object then moved upwards and disappeared from view as it was videotaped again when the vehicle has stopped. A man videotaped an object that looked like a bright light spot from the roof of his home. Video seemed to be taken with a night vision mode, showing a stationary single light spot in the sky for about 1 minute. Witness claimed the object has been frequently sighted in the area. He also claimed to know the nature and intention of the object as a drone collecting information from the communication signals relayed in the area. Classification Note

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009 No. 11. Time and Location May 17, 2009. Ie Masen Kaye Adang village, Syiah Kuala district, Banda Aceh, Aceh province, at 8:30 PM. Event and Circumstances A man walking down the street to a friends home saw between 4 to 5 light spots in the sky. The objects were moving erratically, going up and dropping down, followed by zigzagging maneuvers among the clouds in tremendous speed, making abrupt acceleration and stops. Objects were sighted at an angle of about 80 degrees from the horizon in the South East sky. Two witnesses, riding on a motorcycle, saw an elliptical object hovering in the sky. The aerial object has white lights around the edges and a big red light in the middle. Sighting lasted for about 10 seconds. An object that looked like a star was seen flying-by from South to North. According to the witness, the object was not moving as fast as other objects sighted in the same area, on May 17. The same witness from case no.12 saw three objects passing in the sky in different directions. Two objects appeared, one after the other, emanating a bright yellow light while flying by from North to South. A third object, flying from West to East, was later sighted together with the witness spouse and neighbors. Classification Note

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009 No. 15. Time and Location June 8, 2009. Rancamas residential complex, Bale Endah district, Bandung regency, West Java province, exact time unknown. Event and Circumstances A man decided took photos of an area of flattened paddy field right in front of his home. The phenomena seemed to have occurred recently without anyone knowing what had caused it. It also showed three circular indentations at one corner of the flattened area. A man saw a glowing aerial object moving fast across the northern sky. Object was seen for 2-3 seconds moving in a zigzag trajectory before disappearing from view behind some buildings. Witness then saw three other glowing objects above the buildings, clustered together and disappearing suddenly like a light being switched off. A man driving a car saw a strange aerial object while stopping at a cross road. The object had colorful lights in its four corners/sides. It was swirling clockwise and counter-clockwise in a continuous pattern. When witness returned to the site to try and spot the object again it had already disappeared. A witness sighted an object flying by from South to North, in the Banda Aceh city area. Classification Note Crop circle phenomena are a rarity in Indonesia. Event and Circumstances A man and several other people (that he had alerted to the aerial phenomena) saw a series of strange objects in the sky for about 30 seconds. The witness, heading off to work, first saw 12 triangular objects forming a hexagram formation in the sky. After alerting several other people to the phenomena, he saw another object resembling the shape of an ice cream cone which was bigger than the previous triangles and had a silvery color. On top of the triangular objects the witness also saw two white objects that looked like dots in the sky. A resident of Pemangkat city asked the local newspaper to query on a reported sighting of an unknown pale-white object flying around the citys skies. At least seven people saw three star-like objects moved towards the moon. Object seemingly disappeared into the moon and shortly afterwards the moons appearance changed. It looked brighter with an orange tint and was then surrounded by a colorful, rainbow-like halo. Classification Note

Event and Circumstances A villager, coming back from a walk through a nearby forest, saw two foreign-looking strangers waving at him to approach them. Up-close, the villager started to feel a bit intimidated by the thick, orange and green-striped, astronaut-like clothes that the strangers were wearing. They were said to have blond hair but with non-Caucasian facial features, and bluish-green and dark blue eyes. They were allegedly wearing strange insignias on their sleeves and a glowing, watch-like device on their wrists. The strangers spoke in surprisingly fluent Indonesian, saying they are researchers studying vegetations in the area. The villager was asked to join them but refused to do so over their intimidating attire. A witness saw a bright object flying by to the North West. Object was moving slowly without the typical blinking lights of an airplane. It was seen for about 1 minute. A man saw a round, oval shaped object a few hundred meters high in the sky. Object was said to be of black color about the size of a basket ball. It descended and moved slowly to the West before accelerating abruptly and disappeared from the witness view. Classification Note Testimony was conveyed to a neighbor on holiday from Jakarta. The case was then reported on BETA UFOs mailing list in September. The choosing of August as the case possible timeline was based on the villagers assertion that the incident had taken place in the beginning of the Muslim Ramadhan fasting month (which was in late August). BETA UFO suggested that the object might be a blurfo type of phenomena, where a moving bird/bug got captured in the motion on a camera shot. More details on the concept can be seen at: http://www.rense.com/general 49/blurfo.htm The case is reported by the same witness that reported sightings in the area on May 17, June 1, June 6 and July 10.

A passenger onboard a Lion Air Boeing 737-900 plane flying from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, took pictures of one of the planes wings visible from his window. Just before taking the photo (using a Nikon 40DX camera equipped with a 55mm lens) he saw several lights near one of the ships wings. As he checked the first photo, there were 3 white light spots, one of which looked like a cloud. On the second shot, the object changed into 9 yellow spots, 3 of which were solid while the other 6 looked semitransparent.

AN1

The case received a lot of coverage on several mainstream printed media, including the prestigious aviation magazine Angkasa. The coverage also fetaured an interesting comment by head of the countrys Space and Aviation Agency (LAPAN), Adi Sadewo Salatun (son of pioneering ufologist, J. Salatun), who said the photos are stunning as they might showed a morphing phenomenon, from gaseous to solid state, that has been associated with the UFO 3 phenomena.

The photograph has since been proven to be a reflection of sunlight on the wings curved tip, as a similar photo was replicated by a BETA UFO member in February 2010. Photos can be seen at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beta-ufo/attachments/folder/1788782073/item/1810159300/view

Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009 No. 29. Time and Location October 16, 2009. Polygon residential complex, Palembang city, South Sumatra province, at around 7 PM Event and Circumstances Two witnesses, sky gazing on the roof of their home, saw a bright object flying by in the sky. It was first assumed as an airplane that regularly passes in the area before the object suddenly turned left, off the usual flight path of airplanes, and stopped while showing five blinking lights. Object then moved upwards and disappeared. A passenger on a plane heading for Banjarmasin city in South Kalimantan province from Jakarta saw a strange object in the sky while the plane was moving towards the runway. Object was seen emanating a turquoise light that faded in and out while it slowly swirled around in the dark and cloudy sky. As the plane moved witness then saw 4 other similar objects appearing near the first one, forming a kite-like formation. The sighting ends as the planes movement then made the witness unable to view the objects anymore. Three witnesses saw two objects shaped like a kite in front of their home, for about 15 minutes before it disappeared from view. The object, emanating an orange light, was seen making an L-shaped maneuver. The sighting was also said to be followed by a temporary disruption of the witness cell phone signal. Indonesian UFO Case Review - 2009 No. 32. Time and Location October 28, 2009. Sorong, West Papua province, at around 9:30 PM. Event and Circumstances A man, visiting a friends home during a blackout in the area, saw a bright, star-like object flying by in the sky. The object moved slowly across the sky before accelerating and disappearing from his view. The object looked like it was shrouded by a certain material that left a trail behind as it accelerates away. A man was taking some photographs of traditional fisherman ships in Ancol beach, North Jakarta. Two frames of his photos, as they were uploaded to his computer, showed a strange, small, brightly-lit white object flying pass one of the boats. The photo was taken using a Canon EOS 400 D camera, with a 1/100 seconds shutter speed. A witness saw a bright light-spot moving very quickly across the sky. The object moved from North to South and accelerated to an even higher speed before disappearing from his view. The object emanated a very bright light that did not reflect on the surrounding clouds. A witness saw an object with three yellow lights and one red light flying by in the sky. He did not think it was anything other than a normal airplane until the object stopped and hovered in mid air. Event and Circumstances At least two witnesses saw a reddish, triangularshaped object hovering in the sky, on top of some buildings across from the apartment. The photo was taken with an SLR camera (with no further spec. available) and does not show a very clear object. No account of maneuver was also stated. Four witnesses saw a blinking, bright orange object flying by quite slow, South to North, from the fifth floor of an office building. Object was triangular in shape, like an arrow head and emanated a rainbow-like light around its centre. Several witnesses (exact number unknown), out to enjoy fireworks display during New Years Eve, saw multiple bright, orblike objects flying by in tremendous speed across the sky. Some are grouped together in certain formations (one of which was triangular). Several other witnesses reportedly heard rushing and music-box like sounds during the sighting.
