Bill and Betty MacTavish, longtime
residents of Howard City, were select-
ed as 2010 Howard City Harvest Fes-
tival Grand Marshals. The 8th Annual
Harvest Festival will be on Saturday,
Sept. 18, 2010 with the Grand Parade
at 1 p.m. starting from MacNaughton
Elementary School.
The couple met at Burleson Car
Agency in Lakeview through salesman
and mutual friend, Ernie Yoder, the
summer of 1954. They were married 10
months later, with their friend, Ernie,
as best man at their wedding on March
19, 1955. The wedding took place at
the 7th Day Adventist Church which
the Methodist Church was renting be-
cause their church had burned down.
The church where they were married
in is currently Zellie’s Opry House.
Betty (Yockey) MacTavish was
born April 7, 1931, at home. She start-
ed school in Detroit, and first grade
through 12th at Howard City School.
She started working at 12 years old at
the Curtis Ice Cream Parlor and then
Reynolds Drug Store for eight years.

Wayne A. Benge
Army Pvt. Wayne A. Benge has graduated from basic
combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier stud-
ied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values,
physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in
basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare
and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching,
rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map
reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice
system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training
exercises.
He is the son of Scott Benge of Redberry Court, Rock-
ford, Mich., and grandson of Golda Benge of Delton St.,
Madison Heights, Mich.
Benge is a 2008 graduate of Cedar Springs High
School, Mich.

OBITUARY
Gary L. Garner
Mr. Gary L. Garner, 63, of Sand Lake,
passed away on Sunday morning, Sept. 5,
2010.
He met the love of his life at a dance.
After Gary found out that Dale worked in a
restaurant in Greenville, he was a frequent
customer. After a year of a loving courtship,
they eloped to Mexico and were married on
Feb. 25, 1968. They stayed in California
where Gary worked as an auto mechanic.
As their family grew, Gary and Dale moved
back here and settled on the lake. He then
worked for Westinghouse (now Knoll Furni-
ture, Inc.) until his retirement. When Gary
and Dale bought their home on the lake, it
was really a run-down place. With lots of
love, companionship, and work, they made
their home on the lake, a place of comfort
for family and friends. Gary enjoyed play-
ing practical jokes. He really liked antiqu-
ing and going to yard sales. Gary had a tal-
ent for turning his purchases into objects
of beauty. He and Dale also liked to travel.
They visited many foreign countries and

“J and H is committed to the commu-
nities that they serve and we are proud to
be able to sponsor such a successful event
this year.” Reeves said and he anticipates
an even better Circus next year. “Higher
advance ticket sales are where the benefit
to the community comes from. If we im-
prove the advance sales, we can increase
the donation. Next year we hope to do a
better job of advance sales and be able to
help the Skate Board Committee gain a
little more toward their goal. They have
an admirable goal to provide a safe envi-
ronment for our youth.”
Mr. Reeves emphasized the impor-
tance of the help J and H received from
Independent Bank, First Bank and Com-
munity First Credit Union with ticket
sales. “Without their help advance sales
would have been far less than where they
ended up.” He said.
The Kelly Miller Circus folks said
they were happy with the turn out and
said they would be happy to return. Their
planning begins in October and we may
know by the end of the year when the
next Circus is coming to Howard City.

The service for Gary will be Wednesday
at 11 a.m. at Sand Lake United Methodist
Church, 65 Maple, Sand Lake, MI 49343,
with Pastor Darryl Miller officiating. Inter-
ment in Crandell Cemetery. Those plan-
ning an expression of sympathy are asked
to consider Sand Lake United Methodist
Church. Relatives and friends may meet
with the family at the Pederson Funeral
Home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

take advantage of senior citizens, stay-
at-home moms, students and injured
or handicapped people looking to make
money conveniently at home. Job hunt-
ers should use extreme caution when con-
sidering a work-at-home offer and always
research the company with their BBB first
at www.bbb.org.
Red Flag: The employer asks for
money upfront. It is rarely advisable for
an applicant to pay upfront fees or make
a required purchase to get a job. The BBB
often hears from job hunters who paid a
phony employer for supposedly required
background checks or training for jobs
that didn’t exist.

Red Flag: The salary and benefits of-
fered seem too-good-to-be-true. The ad-
age holds true for job offers: if the deal
sounds too good to be true, it probably
is. Phony employers might brag about
exceptionally high salary potential and
excellent benefits for little work and no
experience necessary in order to lure un-
suspecting job hunters into their scam.
Red Flag: Employer e-mails are rife
with grammatical and spelling errors.
Online fraud is often perpetrated by
scammers located outside the U.S. Their
first language usually isn’t English and
this is often evident in their poor grasp
of the language which can include poor
grammar and the misspelling of com-

mon words.
Red Flag: The employer requires you
to check your credit report. After post-
ing their resumes online or responding
to online job listings, many job hunters
received what they thought was good
news: an e-mail from an interested em-
ployer. In order to be considered for the
job, the applicant has to check his or her
credit report through a recommended
Web site.
Red Flag: The employer is quick to
ask for personal information such as So-
cial Security or bank account numbers.
Some job seekers have been surprised to
learn they’ve gotten a job without having
to do a single interview. However, when
the employer then asked for personal in-
formation in order to fill out the neces-
sary paperwork, suspicions were raised
— and rightly so. Regardless of the rea-
son, a job applicant should never give
out his or her Social Security or bank ac-
count numbers over the phone or email
and only after they’ve confirmed the job
is legitimate.
Red Flag: The job requires you to
wire money through Western Union or
MoneyGram or receive and forward sus-
picious goods. Many phony jobs require
the employee to cash a check sent by the
company through the mail and then wire
a portion of the money on to another en-
tity.

Naughton Elementary School be-
fore retiring.
Bill was born on Dec. 16, 1928,
in Detroit. He moved to Lakeview
in 1941 and then to Six Lakes in
1950. He was drafted in Novem-
ber 1950 and sent to Germany in
1951 and discharged in 1952.
He started working for Mich-
Con Gas Co. in December 1955
and moved to Howard City in
1958.
Bill served two terms on the
Howard City Village Council and
was a volunteer on the Howard
City Fire Department.
Bill retired from MichCon Gas
Co. in 1984.
Bill and Betty have two sons,
Donald and Debbie, Bruce and

Jackie, four grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
They are members of Heritage
United Methodist Church.
When both Bill and Betty were
asked what they most enjoyed
about the Harvest Festival, Bill
said the old cars at the car show,
while Betty said she preferred the
arts and crafts and quilt exhibit.
The couple we’re grand mar-
shals years ago for the Charity
Festival long before the Harvest
Festival was established.
“It’s a nice honor to be cho-
sen,” Betty said.
They enjoy living in Howard
City because of the small city life
it has to offer.
The Howard City Harvest Fes-
tival Committee is honored to have

munity appreciates all the years of

Please take notice that pursuant to the provisions of the Consolidated Elec-
tion Law, as amended, the Board of Education of Tri County Area Schools,
Counties of Montcalm, Kent and Newaygo, State of Michigan, will conduct
a public hearing on the establishment of a new regular election date pursuant
to law.
The dates authorized by current law for school regular elections are:
(a) The November general election date (even years)
(b) The November general election date (odd years)
(c) The November general election date in both even and odd years
(d) The May regular election date in both even and odd years
(e) The odd year may regular election date
The Board will discuss and consider option (b) above for regular school elec-
tion dates at the public hearing.
Establishment of a new regular election date will result in the term of office of
current school board members being extended to fit the new election cycle.
The hearing will be held in the Board Room in the district at 6:30 o’clock in
the pm on the 13th day of September, 2010.
If the Board of Education fails to approve the tentative election date or any
other date authorized by law, the regular election will continue to be held at
the May general election annually, continuing with May 2011.
The Board of Education is authorized by law to adopt a resolution setting the
regular election date immediately subsequent to the public hearing.
