From 1 9 through 21 September 1960, f i v e t e s t f l i g h t s f o r a
t o t a l 10 hours were flown with a commercial model S - 6 2 ~h e l i c o p t e r
a t the AFFTC t o determine i t s general f l i g h t c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s . Mr.
Kenneth R . F e r r e l l was p r o j e c t engineer and Captain Paul J . Balfe, 4
USAF, was p r o j e c t p i l o t .
Manufactured by the Sikorsky A i r c r a f t Division of United
Lircraft Corporation, the S-62A was powered by a s i n g l e General
d l e c t r i c T-58 gas f r e e turbine engine. Basic weight of the air-
c r a f t was 5,032 pounds with a u s e f u l load c a p a b i l i t y of 2,468
. pounds. The S-62A was e s s e n t i a l l y an improved k p h i b i o u s , t u r -
bine powered model of the H-19 h e l i c o p t e r using many o f the same
lynahic components.
I n t h e f i v e f l i g h t ten hour t e s t , AFFTC personnel found the
;-62A possessed good f l y i n g q u a l i t i e s . Sideward and rearward
f l i g h t c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s were e x c e l l e n t . C o n t r o l l a b i l i t y was
scceptable about a l l a x i s and the plane was easy t o f l y . Major
ihortcomings i n f l y i n g q u a l i t i e s were high pedal f o r c e s and poor
lynamic l a t e r a l d i r e c t i o n a l s t a b i l i t y during climb. 64
