Foreword
Perhaps humankind is not so different from the rest of its neighbors on the planet, especially other animals. We are predators in every sense of the word; we are weak when circumstances overwhelm us and bold when we feel secure. In addition, our need to communicate with each other is as vital as is breathing. And this is the key to everything…
Núria Salán communicates with sublime control; she does so avidly and with a special charm. Of this I have no doubt. But the most remarkable thing is that in this work, Are You Busy Friday? she invites us to live and share with its main character a story that reflects very well what ‘communication’ means.
Times change, and we have also done so against our will and swiftly. Postmen or mail carriers, intermediary figures of information and messages, have been cardinal in the history of our society, still today performing tasks that require their existence. Nonetheless, a new, virtual conduit for relating and communicating with each other has scaled the ranks of interaction –one we will seemingly never again be able to live without: email!
Imagine the sent
folder of anyone you don't know—imagine the stories and misadventures this electronic sentry guards, and very jealously, revealing them only to the account holder or chosen recipient to whom they are sent at the speed of light—letters that form words with a life of their own and phrases that seek to have their own voice, messages that are very often more emboldened when typed on a keyboard than when sender and receiver are face to face, feelings that occupy a specific place and come to life in their turn, as they cannot be governed by any sort of disciplined schedule.
If we also possess creativity, a sense of humor and the author's ease with words for portraying the truths—sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter—that surround us, we find this: a story I will always remember as a modern fable that hooks you from the start and draws you into an intimacy, a life and characters that might seem invisible but who remain with you throughout the story.
The cast of the book you are reading is original and appealing, and it beckons you to delve in and follow where it leads you. So much so that this foreword will take up no more of your time and I invite you to commence. Get comfortable—you are about to be trapped in Núria Salán's web, but don't fret, she spins with heart and intelligence. She moves you without harm, and that is only within the reach of a few.
Enjoy your read and congratulations on such a fine choice!
