QANAS. SNIPERS OF THE REBEL SYRIA | TMORIS GRECKO 5 LIFE UNDER TELESCOPIC SIGHTS Zine el Abidine ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak ruled their countries Tunisia and Egypt with a strong hand for more than three decades. They were overthrown in a matter of weeks, in January and February 2011, by uprisings that left what seemed to be painful but affordable fgures of victims. Many Syrians thought they could repeat the experience and started demonstrating weeks later, on March 15th. Bashar al Assads regime, though, had prepared itself: its troops went out to smash all dissidence at any cost. Slowly, the peaceful opposition became an armed resistance that, on July 2012, dared to attack Syrias second metropolis. I had been here in October 2009, a tranquil time from which I remember the architecture and the children. Like the ones in this photo I took back then at the ancient Umayyad mosque. Now, the complex has been destroyed. Of the little ones I know nothing. I hope theyre safe, though doubtlessly affected by this brutal war. The battle for Aleppo was lasting six months when I visited the rebel-held part, on January 2013. The city was split in halves and its whole population was exposed to bombs and qanaseen (plural: snipers; singular, qanas; feminine, qanasa) that have anhilated entire families. Thats what happened to this lonely old man who came to warm up. He said the confict had killed everyone in his family, from his great- grandchildren up to his siblings. He was the last of his line. And he had nothing to do but wait for victory day. CANS. To die under the castle Aleppos castle, one of the biggest and oldest in the world, is placed on a high point. You can see it behind and above the ruined passports building. From its walls and towers, the qanaseen (snipers) dominate the old city and harass the civil population. The youngsters have got used to that and, to them, crossing zigzagging among the bullets ziiing ziiing is a game with the purpose of annoying the shooter. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN This is the frst photograph I took in the Aleppo at war. Its the one I like the most, even if it doesnt look like a war photo. Behind, illuminated by the sun, is Avenue Akiul, where pretty girls are exposed to the shots of the qanaseen. The shades are safer, for the risk diminishes: there all you have to fear is one of those terrible bombs, thrown by the governments pilots and capable of knocking down entire buildings. The girls want to have fun. They take each others hands, look at one another and create circles of laughter, a narrow space of a world where there is no place for death, and the only thing that fts in is fun. Yes, the suffering of the people is worse than in times of peace. They try, nevertheless, to laugh more, because they have to do it: how is it possible to survive in permanent sadness? To keep going, at war as in life, its necessary to have the vital energy of happiness. People laugh in Aleppo: both civilian and combatants who are in the front lines waiting for the bullet that will take them out of here. In our society of the spectacle, only the worst is told about wars. Because this is what sells, what attracts spectators and, with them, advertisers. Some believe that speaking about the positive aspects of the conficts is to trivialize them, to disrespect the victims. You do not favor to them if you choose to tell only their catastrophe, though: this is another way of dehumanizing them, of turning them into impotent objects of compassion. The TV screens are full of that and, for the viewers, the drama of war becomes just one more of the many entertainment options to discard with a click on a remote control. Because, also, if it looks as if there nothing but rottenness, if everything is lost and there is no hope, theres nothing you can do. So why lose your calm worrying about problems without solutions? Although there are alternatives and it is possible to do things, if we lose sight of the complexity of human beings and their environment, we end up with soap operas that are easy to discard when they bore you. This album of photos is a task that was interrupted when my colleagues and I were abducted. For the time being, returning to Syria would be irresponsible, because we dont know for sure who kidnapped us and it would be easy to fall in their hands again. Here you have, then, only a sketch of the battle of Aleppo: a few lines that tried to fee from mere spectacles and become the human size of things. A size that can be as tiny as a little girl, and as enormous as the desire to have fun, to truly live, despite everything else. Missing Martn, my brother. RIP. Tmoris Grecko. Cairo, April 2013. CANS. Project Qanas was made possible by the contribution of wonderful friends who responded to Project Qanas Teams call to support Tmoris after his abduction in Aleppo. Some of them lent their work and others funded its tasks: producing the Qanas book (which, as it turns out, became two volumes, with this photonotebook as a complement for the text-only narration), editing an audiovisual and replacing Tmoris stolen work equipment. The qanas, or sniper, has become one of the inevitable actors starring in the Syrian war. Normal people must be fully aware of him: their lives depend on keeping in mind where a qanas is acting. Hanging blankets on streets and avenues that block the qanaseen view have become a common feature in disputed towns and cities. The author delivers us a narration from the frontlines that helps us to feel near these characters and the hard situation of Aleppo, the second-most important urban centre in the country. This notebooks photographs are destined to accompany the books reading, to put faces on the conficts protagonists and images on the civilian populations daily life. Its a powerful written and graphic testimony, necessary not just to understand, but also to feel the Syrian tragedy.
