Runebergin tortut (tortut=tarts)

Tortut in the Finnish meaning is tarts, but some foreigners might call them muffins because they look like muffins. Runebergs tart is a Finnish pastry that is seasoned with almonds and rum and it usually weighs about 100 grams. There is usually raspberry jam in a sugar ring on the tart. The tart got its name from the Finnish poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (born 1804) who, according to legend, enjoyed the tart with punsch on every breakfast. Runebergs tarts are typically eaten only in Finland and are generally available from the beginning of January to Runebergs birthday on February the 5th. Popular legend tells that Runebergs wife, Fredrika, created the tart. Her recipe book from the 1850s has the tart recipe which is believed to be a variation on an earlier recipe by confectioner Lars Astenius from Porvoo.
