1.- SEXAGESIMAL SYSTEM. The Sexagesimal Numerical System is in which to pass a unit to the other it is necessary to multiply or divide by 60. That system is used for measure time and angles. Such us: A.- The measure of time: The units are hour, minute and second. The equivalences are the following: 1 hour=60 minutes; 1h=60' 1 minute = 60 second; 1'=60'' So if we want to pass a unit to the other, we have to consider the following: HOUR x60 :60 MI UTE :3600 x3600 :60 x60 SECO D

When we measure the time, we can obtain a very big and very small amounts. In both cases, when the unit is greater than the hour or less than the second, they are of the decimal system. For example: 1) A tenth of second: 0.1'' 2) A hundredth of second: 0.01'' 3) A thousandth of second: 0.001'' 4) A solar day: The time it takes the earth to revolve around itself. (23h., 56', 45'') 5) A lunar month: The time from a lunar phase to the same following lunar phase. (29 days, 12h. , 44') 6) A solar year: The time it takes the earth to turn the sun over.(365 days and 6 hours) B.- The units of angles: Such us degrees, minutes and second. The equivalences are the following: 1 Degree = 60 minutes; 1=60' 1 minute = 60 second; 1'=60'' So if we want to pass a unit to the other, we have to consider the following: DEGREE x60 :60 MI UTE :3600 x3600 :60 ACTIVITIES: Exercises about units. x60 SECO D

2.- COMPLEX AND NO COMPLEX EXPRESSION. In the Sexagesimal System:

A amount is written as a complex form: If the amount is written by more than one unit. A amount is written as a no complex form: If the amount is written by an only one unit.

For example: 3h. 30'(complex form) = 3,5 h. (no complex form)

3.- OPERATIONS IN THE SEXAGESIMAL SYSTEM. a.- Addition: if we add two or more amounts in the sexagesimal system, we have to take into account the following steps:

STEPS 1.- We put one of the amount over the other; degrees (or hours) over degrees (or hours), minutes over minutes and seconds over seconds. 2.- We add the units

EXAMPLE: 120 13' 45'' + 12 50' 30'' 120 13' 45'' 12 50' 30''

120 13' 45'' 12 50' 30'' 132 63' 75''

3.- We transform the units. They don't have to 75''=1' 15'' exceed 60. 63'+1'= 64 '= 1 4' 132+1= 133 answer: 133 4' 15'' b.- Subtration: We put one of the amount over the other; degrees (or hours) over degrees (or hours), minutes over minutes and seconds over seconds. We start subtracting seconds. In all the cases, the subtrahend have to be less than the minuend. If that doesn't happen , we take an unit immediately greater and we add it to the minuend. Now we can subtract without problem. We have to do that for all the units. For example: 20 13' 45'' - 12 50' 30'' 45''-30''=10'' 13' 50' is not posible, so 20 1 = 19, and 1 = 60' have to be add to 13'. 13' + 60' = 73', and now we can subtract 73' 50' = 23', and 19 12 = 7 answer: 7 23' 10''

c.- Multiplication by a natural number: In that case, we multiply the natural number by every amount (unit). Then we transform the results to express it by amounts less than 60. For example: ( 10 10' 10'' ) x 7 10 10' 10'' x7 70 70' 70''; 70'' = 1' 10'' 70' + 1' = 71' = 1 11' 70 + 1 = 71 answer: 71 11' 10'' ACTIVITIES: Operations with amounts in sexagesimal system.
